Outing date: 19th November – 20th November 2011
Nandur Madhameshwar is one of the wildlife sanctuaries in Maharashtra well known for its migratory birds.
Nandur Madhameshwar is an overflow dam constructed in 1913s and is situated in the Niphad Taluka of Nasik Dist. The lake gets its water from Gangapur and Darna water reservoirs, which is later used for irrigation. In time this lake has become a substantial wetland habitat and is now considered as Bharatpur of Maharashtra because of the different species of migratory birds that regularly visit its wetlands. Forest Dept. has constructed few watch-towers to get a birds-eye view of the vast lake.. Paddle boats can also be arranged to explore the lake.
Vast number of migratory birds such as White Stork, Glossy Ibis, Spoonbills, Flamingo, Goose Brahminy Duck, Pintails, Mallard, Widgeon, Gargenery Shoveller, Pochards, Cranes Shanks, Curlews, Pratincole Wagtails, Godwits, Weavers, etc.
The resident birds include Black Ibis, Spot Bills, Teals, Little Grebe, Cormorants, Egrets, Herons, Stork, Kites, Vultures, Buzzards, Harriers, Osprey, Quails, Partridges, Eagles, Water Hens, Sand Pipe, Swifts, Grey hornbill, Peafowl, etc
Few other mammals can also be spotted here to name a few Otters, Palm Civet, Fishing Cat, Jackal, Mongoose, Wolves, also few species of snakes can be spotted here.
Last time I remember the watch-towers were almost surrounded by reed vegetation making me look tiny in front of it, kingfishers and small bee eaters were in abundance in the area.. Different species of grebes swam on the opposite side of lake but there different colours could be seen from a distance just with naked eyes. Our guide was splendid fellow with loads of information to enlighten us. Come and experience the Bharatpur of Maharashtra with us…….
It is an excellent opportunity for shutterbugs to capture various birds in their camera….. So don’t wait, just call us ASAP to register. Direct registrations via phone would only be entertained for outing and no confirmation here on Facebook RSVP would be considered as full finally registered.
